I am in the process of pushing our less interesting Xorg patches 
upstream, and I had a great experience with quilt and managing patches 
as patches. Not sure how it scales to the size glibc/gdb/guestfs patches 
but it worked great for me.

(and of course, I wish Fedora left all the silly patch business and used 
git only as $DEITY intended).
