You can't just follow the established norm all the time, otherwise progress would not be possible. Sometimes you have to change. Now, I think that initially the change was rushed into Prod without proper testing, but that's watter under the bridge. It was hoped that once people would get used to the new feature, they would love it. That's reasonable. However, we gave it more than enough time (4 years!) for this to happen. It didn't pan out as hoped. There is plenty of circumstantial evidence to warrant a second look at that decision.
