from what i've come across it should work via hdparm. maybe a
manufacturer/vendor specific thing? hdparm doesn't seem to be updated
that often... like smartd is. have you asked the authors / tried
different kernel versions? with recent kernel versions, this may be
tricky.

i don't need/use SATA drives, tho, so i'm taking a wild guess here...
