I normally use eflite (http://eflite.sf.net) with yasr when I want
software speech. It is an Emacspeak server, and yasr has support for
Emacspeak servers. I have used it with ViaVoice before, but it is
unstable, and yasr does not currently provide a good way for the speech
synthesizer to be restarted, as Emacspeak does.
