Wow, I have, in /etc/lilo.conf, among other stuff. append="hdd=ide-scsi speakup_synth=dtlk", or something similar. It works, not worried about the ide-scsi for the burner as without modules it won't ever work anyways. PPP is also a module I can't seem to force in to place, maybe he just looked at the end of the file and took the image from anywhere, although I specifically gave the saitech address so it wouldn't be a version I couldn't use. When I boot the cd, and type text speakup_synth=dtlk, or even text linux speakup_synth=dtlk, I get no speech. If I do linux speakup_synth=dtlk, it boots straight to x before I can slip the text parameter in. Can I use speakup from the ftp site, or do I really need the files from cvs? I tried checking out speakup with cygwin, and get no files or directory called speakup that I can take to a floppy and mount ext2. I suppose if it won't read fat or fat32 on disk, I can use cygwin to cat the speakup archive to disk, and cat it to a file aggain when linux boots with the stripped kernel, that second serial port I wish my laptop had would've been the easiest anyways, primary is hooked to my dectalk express there.
