I see that other people have replied to your question about whether it's 
linux or not. But it's definately a flavor of unix. So you'll be able to do 
most of the shell commands you see here.

I don't know how Sun OS compares to linux but just having the shell account 
is what really matters. You should be able to learn a lot about unix-like 
operating systems that way. There are so many things you might be able to 
do that it really depends on what you want to do.
