To get it running into virtualbox you'll need to follow-up the steps at https://docs.automotivelinux.org/en/needlefish/#0_Getting_Started/1_Quickstart/Using_Ready_Made_Images/ The blank/black image sounds like the IDE/AHCI issue when we switched to UEFI. Hmm, if you're more familiar with wmare maybe additing some documentation for using it? Suspect fairly similar changes being needed: using an ICH controller and switch from IDE to AHCI to be able to boot the image.
