Why not installing your system on your disk plugged on the standard ide0?
you can so compile a new kernel, test it (plug an other disk on the promise card) and at the end, changing fstab, change your disk on ide0 to the promise card.
that's what i did.
I used ide rack to speed up the plug changes.
If you have a onboard chip, i think the way can be similar, maybe easier (no plug changes?).

Thanks for you reply,

I have read this excelent howto, but the problem is that I need an
installed linux in order to compile the kernel with the native drivers
option. So, first of all, I need to install RedHat with the FastTrak module.
Any other idea?

Does anyone know how to install RedHat 8 on a new system with a Promise

but the module couldn't be loaded because it was compiled with gcc 2.x

while

the kernel was compiled with gcc 3.x.

Thanks in advance.

Try to use the native linux driver (included in the linux kernel
sources) The "Linux ATA RAID HOWTO" ll give you good informations.
