Maine airport struggles under holiday crush The Thanksgiving holiday went smoothly for air travelers in most of the nation, but some passengers at the Portland (Maine) International Jetport weren't so lucky. Officials say long lines that caused some travelers to miss their flights both Sunday and Monday. The weekend following Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel periods of the year, and the airport recommended that passengers arrive two hours before their scheduled departure. Despite that warning, however, some allowed only a half hour or 45 minutes for check-in and screening, and Portland Transportation Director Jeff Monroe said some were left waiting in line when their flights took off without them. "The lines are the longest we've seen," said Monroe, noting that passenger volume at the Jetport exceeded everyone's expectations. Officials were looking at changes that can be made between now and Christmas to speed up screening.
