RVSM stands for Reduced Vertical Separation Minima. Normally the vertical separation standard between FL290 (29,000 ft) and FL410 (41,000 ft) is 2000 ft. However in approved blocks of airspace using acft which are appropriately equipped and certified, vertical separation can be reduced to 1,000 ft thus allowing more acft to use the airspace at any given time.
