That might work for smoking, although more likely because the smokers
will leave when they see you coming, rather than because they stop
smoking. But "leaving when they see you coming" is not exactly what
you're hoping for from maintainers.
The point seems to have been missed.
The primary salutary effect of a *collective*
decision would be on prospective smokers,
e.g. children.
Current adult smokers 'twould be more likely to kill than cure,
hence the sacrifice mentioned in a non-quoted portion of my post.
The author of the complained-of code
roughly corresponds to the adult smoker.
The possible author of the next such annoyance
roughly corresponds to the prospective smoker.
