Old cases vary widely in quality, some were very robust.   It is getting
harder to find robust newer cases as market has been flooded with
cheap versions.   I'm retired now, but at my former work we had
dozens of LaCie external drives with zero failures even years
after warranty expired (some of the drives did have to be replaced).

RPi cases are rarely shielded, so RFI from USB3 can be an issue.  Some
power supplies used with RPi may not support high external USB loads.

Does the USB hub have its own power supply?   I use a USB2 hub with
external power to isolate USB2 devices (mouse, keyboard, old Android
phones) from the USB3 external drive (without it I get random keyboard
resets).

I'll add one thing which may be important. I have an old(er) disk which
I plugged in this old casing and connected it to the rpi: stopped
working very quickly. I plug it into my X1 and no problem. So I thought
the disk/enclosure was old. Maybe now I'm thinking it could be power
requirements? The old casing has a "hole" to add an extra power supply
so maybe it would work just fine with it.

What's your take on this?

External power is recommended with RPi -- you might get away without
external power using a solid-state drive, but risky if the drive has a motor.
See: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/power/README.md

I generally try to buy external devices with good spec sheets that tell me
the power requirements, but for flea-market gear there are USB meters that
measure voltage and current (Klein ET920 USB Digital Meter, USB-A and USB-C).

Thank you.

You are very welcome and good luck.
