Bargain USB enclosures are often junk. If they are powered by the USB port they often draw excessive
power leading to erratic behaviour. USB3 uses frequencies that often cause RF interference with other
devices, bluetooth, etc. so need careful attention to shielding and may be susceptible to RF interference
if there are RF sources nearby.
1. does smartmontools recognize the device?
2. can you transfer the disk to another known good system/enclosure for testing?
3. are you using a limited power PC (RPi, laptop, etc.)?
4. does the external drive+enclosure work using a USB2 port?
5. does the enclosure have its own power source or is it powered from USB?
