Normal stuff so far. This last line suggests the kernel recognizes the
device and is applying a quirk to properly handle it.

Pretty much all of these lines are not normal.

The most suspicious from the top suggests maybe the quirk isn't
correct, or possibly it's not getting enough power, or just some
incompatibility between the host USB controller and the one on the
client.

Best suggestion I can offer is ensure it's connected via an externally
powered hub. The way the hub works, the command and data stream is
normalized, and the device properly powered. All of my USB problems
with drives have been solved by using such a hub. But it is still
possible it's some other problem in which case the place to go is the
usb list. Let them know what kernel you're using, and the output from
lsusb, as well as the kernel messages you're seeing.
