If I may chip in here: the vuescan software doesn't even see my 35mm
slide scanner, which uses an obscure chip from Microdia (USB code
0c45:6353), even though xsane does see it. Unfortunately xsane can't
drive the scanner at full resolution so I still need the proprietary
driver using a VM, and now that has stopped working as well :-(
