If you couldn't list any files or directories on it I was going to tell you to boot into rescue mode from a CD and reinstall grub. I’ve done ”exactly the same thing” (as they say) three times now, and on the third I actually got a working system. Except that Gnome scared the …. Out of me when it turned itself on its head.
