It sounds to me as if the /boot on /dev/sda1 didn't completely get grub2 installed on it. If you couldn't list any files or directories on it I was going to tell you to boot into rescue mode from a CD and reinstall grub.

Actually, to my utter amazement the thing actually now works.
I’ve done ”exactly the same thing” (as they say) three times now, and on the third I actually got a working system.
Except that Gnome scared the …. Out of me when it turned itself on its head.
Need to think about what I did different this time – I don’t recall doing anything different which is weird.
