It seems that Fedora-packaged version of blender is buggy. What I did was to go to blender's home page, download the latest .tar version, unpacked it, and it worked flawlessly. Blender is apparently designed to run autonomously from the directory structure of its own (unpacked) .tar archive. So just unpack it somewhere, cd into it, and do ./blender Works perfectly, loads files and all. ;-) I didn't bother to find out what is wrong with the Fedora-packaged version. Probably a bug should be filed against the package.
