Not that it matters, and no one is paying me, here's why I'm using
Gnome Shell on Fedora 18, after rejecting it previously:

2. I like the way it looks.
I'll stop here, because many complaints about how it works, mine too,
are a "look" thing (appearance, *and* process of you using it). The
main gripe, and mine too, would be that we used Gnome because it worked
in the way that we wanted to use the computer. Now it doesn't.

I take issue with the first point, as a separate thing. It has been
buggy and CPU intensive, more so than Gnome 2. You, now, need a much
faster computer and better graphics card, just for the basic user
interface that everything else will run on, never mind applications.

FOSS is all about freedom for *developers*, not users. The Gnome developers exercised their freedom to drop Gnome 2.

But, that gets me back to my point: If there was a real connection between what FOSS users want and what FOSS developers deliver, then Gnome 2 would not have been abandoned. There's nothing in the interaction between developers and users to keep something like Gnome 2 alive when devs want to walk away from it.

I've never been wedded to any one interface. For me, Gnome 2 was just another GUI. My hardware is more than adequate, and Gnome 3 has not been particularly buggy for me.

I can understand people who wanted to stay with Gnome 2 being upset that it's gone. What I don't understand is the vitriol directed at the Gnome developers for letting it go. Or, trashing Gnome 3 because it is not Gnome 2. I think that's rooted in unwarranted expectations.
