My argument is that regular, controlled, standardized user testing should be part of the development process. It isn't and won't be, given the lack of resources in FOSS. It's a limitation we need to accept.
Since FOSS developers usually lack a way to find out what users really do so they can write software to make that easier, they might as well ignore anecdotal feedback, other than bug reports, and go with their own assumptions about how and why they and their friends use software.
