Why is it not fair? What do developers have to lose if they annoy users?
We users get a lot of good stuff from FOSS developers without paying for
it. (And that's not a FOSS requirement.) That's great. But, the flip
side, the unintended consequence, is that FOSS developers are dependent
on FOSS users for nothing. The only thing of value that a FOSS developer
gets in exchange for giving away his or her product is personal
satisfaction. It's human nature that satisfaction, alone, is unlikely to
obligate FOSS developers to users.
