Assuming an upstream tarball contains one example file under the BSD license

Can we rm that nonfree file in %prep, or do we need to strip it from the
tarball as well?

My assumption is that we strip content that we cannot even re-distribute from
SRPM, which should not be the case here, but I am not sure.

I agree that it's best to remove it from the tarball so that it
doesn't end up in the SRPM.

Thanks for clarification. We'll do that. We have also contacted upstream and asked them politely if they would consider dropping it.

The difference between this license and the "Nuclear Variant" of MIT
is that the Nuclear Variant says "we're not responsible for anything
that happens if you use it in this context" but it does not forbid the
use the way this license does.
