Which ClamAV requires 1.2.1? AFAIK 0.83 is the latest release and it recompiles just fine with zlib-1.1.4.

Well, that's the achilles heel with rpm. There's tons of rpms out there that will work fine and compile fine with older dependant package but theres a superficial requirement that a newer package is need.
