you are right Pete about nonsense of setting ALPS with Synaptics driver...
But the thing is that other distros i've used (ubuntu, Mandriva, OpenSuse)
on this computer were seeing it like that... and I was able to configure this touchpad
via synaptics drivers or utilities...

Anyway, tpconfig looks like an avenue i havent tried. But i'm not familiar with it..
how do i use it... and install it? It doesnt look like its on my computer and i cant
find it with Yumex...

Why are you trying to drive an ALPS device with Synaptics driver?
This just makes no sense whatsoever!

Anyway, use tpconfig and stock mouse driver in X11. Kernel, I think,
will load in-kernel alps for you, but it's not a problem. tpconfig
should be able to set the pad anyway.
