I don't really have a strong opinion on this thread one way or the other, but... how is it a security problem if a user who has root access to the system anyway wants to edit privileged files? I understand the argument that running graphical applications as root is generally not a good idea, and I understand the desire to protect against that, but this logic doesn't seem to follow to me. Perhaps I'm not understanding the point you are trying to make here?
