It was always kde-unstable that was timing out with the 'all mirrors tried' error. The strange thing is that the i686 unstable repo (my laptop) was working fine, but on the x86_64 unstable repo (my desktop) was hanging. Maybe Rex' regneration will help. I will make sure my files are straight after last night's messing around and then give it a try.
