(Sorry for the spam, hopeful this will help other users).
1. Killing kwin by hand and restarting solves both kwin (color scheme)
and plasma (lost transparency) issues.
2. Activity manage seem to die due to XCB issues:
$ kactivitymanagerd status
The service is running, version: 6.5.0

3. Any chance all these issues has something to do with:
