No need to. You  are not disconnected when you close the contact list. It's 
just a GUI for some daemons that keep the connection in the background. You 
can add the "Instant Messaging Presence" applet to systray to get notifications 
abut incomming messages and to open contactlist, like with Kopete.

Hmm, could be Telepathy limitation. Have you tried with Empathy?

Does CPU consumption increase with time as well? Could you try attaching gdb 
to plasma-desktop when it's /really/ slow/stuck and provide a backtrace?
