Hi,

FYI: I got this terrible slowness with kopete too, when a new message - with 
animated icon - was waiting for my response. The longer I waited, the slower 
the system became. This happend in Fedora 17.  In 18+ I'm using ktp - no 
animated icon - and haven't seen any slowness recently. May be switching to 
ktp is an option?
