Chris, a.o.
I have tried Ubuntu Studio and Fedora 24 Live CD. Both didn't
find the optical S/PDIF connection.
BTW: I think we had a misunderstanding, as I noticed the Jack
tools on Ubuntu Studio:
I've been trying settings with HDAJackRetask, which is another
kind of Jacks, i.e. to change hardware settings and connections of
the sound chip and connectors (not the virtual sound system)!
Best regards,
M.

Thanks again for your help and suggestions.
I have connected the PC to another receiver. The S/P DIFF
TOSLINK doesn't work on this system either, with 2 different
optical cables. I was able to make the connection with HDMI,
sound and video on this newer system.
I have tried Live CDs and the newest Ubuntu / Mint didn't work.
I also tried an older one to try the solution from the previous
link, but I couldn't install gstreamer-properties. I'll try and
make a life usb later!
Regards,
M.

Marve and list,
Yes, it was one of the trouble shoot steps I toke, connecting my
PS3 to the receiver. I actually used the same optical cable and
it worked!
I'll see if I can do this in the near future!
When I switch between Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output and Analog
Stereo Duplex there are some rtkit-daemon messages, but no
errors.
I'll try this too!
Thanks again!
M.
