And that's what's so puzzling. If VLC worked, I'd chalk it up to the USB device not being the default, and then focus on how to make it the default device.

A, you could well be correct that your problem lies elsewhere.
All i can tell you is that on 14.04, I can set pulse audio to select my Cmedia based device and play everything through it with no problem. Or I can get mpd or guayadeque to play directly through to the hw or plughw alsa device, at all the sampling rates the device supports. I could not do some of this in 12.04. At least some of this exemplary behavior is due to the efforts made by the good people who support Alsa to better handle Cmedia devices in later versions of the kernel and the Alsa code.
