Capturing from multiple subdevices

Hello,

Alsamixer shows multiple Capture items for my sound card. I can record from the first one, but how do I record from the other 2? (Eventually I would like to record multiple tracks at the same time, but I am trying to get the alternate capture items working one at a time first.)

Alsamixer reports my sound card as HDA Intel, chip Analog Devices AD1988B.

Here are amixer capture settings for recording on the first (Capture,0) item. arecord records sound from the front mic with these settings:

Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
  Capabilities: cvolume cswitch penum
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 54
  Front Left: Capture 43 [80%] [6.00dB] [on]
  Front Right: Capture 43 [80%] [6.00dB] [on]
Simple mixer control 'Capture',1
  Capabilities: cvolume cswitch penum
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 54
  Front Left: Capture 43 [80%] [6.00dB] [off]
  Front Right: Capture 43 [80%] [6.00dB] [off]
Simple mixer control 'Capture',2
  Capabilities: cvolume cswitch penum
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 54
  Front Left: Capture 43 [80%] [6.00dB] [off]
  Front Right: Capture 43 [80%] [6.00dB] [off]
...
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',0
  Capabilities: cenum
Items: 'Front Mic' 'Line' 'Mic' 'CD' 'Mix'
  Item0: 'Front Mic'
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',1
  Capabilities: cenum
Items: 'Front Mic' 'Line' 'Mic' 'CD' 'Mix'
  Item0: 'Mic'
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',2
  Capabilities: cenum
Items: 'Front Mic' 'Line' 'Mic' 'CD' 'Mix'
  Item0: 'Line'

Here are amixer capture settings from my attempt to record from the second capture item (Capture,1). arecord did NOT record sound from the front mic with these settings:

Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
  Capabilities: cvolume cswitch penum
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 54
  Front Left: Capture 43 [80%] [6.00dB] [off]
  Front Right: Capture 43 [80%] [6.00dB] [off]
Simple mixer control 'Capture',1
  Capabilities: cvolume cswitch penum
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 54
  Front Left: Capture 43 [80%] [6.00dB] [on]
  Front Right: Capture 43 [80%] [6.00dB] [on]
Simple mixer control 'Capture',2
  Capabilities: cvolume cswitch penum
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 54
  Front Left: Capture 43 [80%] [6.00dB] [off]
  Front Right: Capture 43 [80%] [6.00dB] [off]
...
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',0
  Capabilities: cenum
Items: 'Front Mic' 'Line' 'Mic' 'CD' 'Mix'
  Item0: 'Mic'
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',1
  Capabilities: cenum
Items: 'Front Mic' 'Line' 'Mic' 'CD' 'Mix'
  Item0: 'Front Mic'
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',2
  Capabilities: cenum
Items: 'Front Mic' 'Line' 'Mic' 'CD' 'Mix'
  Item0: 'Line'

Any ideas?

Also, what is the correct terminology. Are these 3 capture items appropriately called "items"? "subdevices"? "capture streams"? All of the above? (I have tried searching for information, but I'm not sure I know what terms to use.)

Thank you,
Dean
