In their infinite "wisdom" Linux developers do not accept the idea of
stable ABI; additionally, this list is full of messages "ALSA worked with
previous Linux kernel and stopped looking after upgrade".

Have a look into ALSA sources - just to discover a lot of common code
for different soundcards. Whenever that common code is broken, the whole
family of cards stops working.
