Audacity is cool, never tried it before.  But still no go, sound
recording is very distorted. 

The problem is the same on Skype, arecord and now audacity.  I had
thought skype might be the problem but rejected that explanation and
that is why in the original post i mentioned the arecord output is also
quite distorted. 

I think that I have an older rpm of skype somewhere.  I'll try that but
doubt very much that will help. Any other help is very welcome.  Thanks,
