Re: playing sound hangs system total

Time to upgrade. The day you bought that mobo was time to upgrade.

May I suggest - upgrade the hardware, or downgrade the software. If you drop back to an old release, a 2.4x kernel, you will find that that stuff is very much in touch. What happens is that each driver is patched to accomodate the newest generation of chips (As carefully as possible). The new chips will be tested extensively, not necessarily the older ones. You also have fierce bottlenecks in that mobo - PCI bus=33mhz and no more, IDE=33Mhz, ISA=15Mhz max (That's double speed, which not everything can take). Do you have AGP? You certainly don't have PCIE. Slowing the ISA bus would be my last shot at that, to see whether it  is an isa problem. I think you can set it at 15Mhz or sys clock/4 (=33Mhz/4 or 8.25 Mhz)

As to my previous post, I am saying to get the box as  resource free as possible and try sound that way. If there's a clash of interrupts, removing stuff will show you. Many older soundcards want irq 10 also.

Your other post about the same problem to the same list is the _last_ thing I'm likely to look at.

Thank You for replay,

but it is dificout to understand, what You mean. (my very bad english)

I am sure it has nothing to do with NICs os USBs. Sometimes it hang by
GDM login (by playing sound).

What do You mean with "clear irq10" ? I had reserved it in BIOS setup
- without effect.

I thing, the problem is in ALSA/kernel itself. I have many times encounter,
that newer kernels/drivers are working worse and worse with older HW
- e.g. my older graphic cards do has worked worse in Ubuntu 8.10 and
more worse in 9.04 and in 9.10 they work nor at all.
Even if the should (<= man pages).

The problem is they are not tested anymore :-(

As I say - in windows XP these cards have worked perfectly.
I have to give it up.

Now I try to use one ISA card, which do not work with alsa, just with
OSS "sb" (whitch do not hangs my system).

The problem is ... see my other post in "alsa-user".

Thank You again
