Correction: I didn't explicitly try "desktop", because I thought it was the default. Well, it isn't, and if I select desktop I get an iec958 digital output channel, but I don't get any output from the speakers, only from the headphones. I looked into patch_analog.c and in patch_ad1884a I see that my laptop is detected as AD1884A_LAPTOP and it initializes some hp specific procedure to toggle the output between the speakers and the headphones, but unfortunately it also disables the digital output. For the time being I commented out the line spec->multiout.dig_out_nit = 0; and now I have sound through the speakers and I have the iec958 channel available. Later I'll try if using that channel produces sound on the tv.
