Something else you may want to look at, is how your setup works in Windows i.e.,
does the audio driver provide the HDMI output device, or is it the NVidia
driver? I believe the latter is unlikely, since it seems common practice for
them to route their dedicated HDMI ports through S/PDIF motherboard headers.
