I figured it was a bit off topic, so I responded directly to the poster. However, if you want my 2 cents, I think for two channel recording, you are far better off just buying a digital recorder. Pull the memory card and read it to the computer for editing. These solid state recorders are ready for action in a second or too. It's doubtful you can boot to linux that quickly. They are very portable, which adds to the capability. [Record outdoor concerts, birds, planes, whatever.] A computer is a very noisy environment, both electrically and acoustically. It takes a lot of engineering in the sound card to make it audio quality. [I refuse to believe any sound card test where the data doesn't come from AP or HP test gear. Period end.] Marantz makes some pretty sophisticated recorders that will probably end up costing the same as getting a high end card. The only real pitfall I've found with these solid state recorders is the 2Gbyte file limit. The ones I've seen are FAT32, so the limit is fundamental. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This SF.net email is sponsored by: High Quality Requirements in a Collaborative Environment.
