I have found something that may be of interest here.  As you may know,
I'm having the same problem on mythbuntu 8.10, with "ATI SBx00 Azalia
(Intel HDA)" which has a Realtek ALC888 chipset as well.  It seems there
is a bug filed on this, and it *may* be fixed by installing new alsa
kernel modules (I have yet to test this).

It seems they added support for more ALC888 powered devices in a new
version... which I hope will fix this.  I will be testing this when I
have time this weekend.
