I've just tried the 2.6.27-r7 Gentoo kernel and it doesn't work any better. 
Both left and right speakers produce very faint sound, and pushing the 
Master, PCM and Front controls to the maximum result in a highly distorted 
loud output on the right speaker only with speaker-test.

Any possibility the same model name would ship with different sound card 
configurations ?
