I've mostly used 'xine'.  It *was* working and the broke.  I thought it
was through an alsa update, but now I know it was not.  I just nabbed a
bunch of ac3 audio files from Bjorne Lynn's site and I am going to try
them to see if they work as expected.

Interesting results.  I do have several settings on the receiver, and I
tried them all.  
While "Left" "Center" "Right" come out as expected neither "Rear Left"
or "Rear right" come out properly.
Mixed results, though. Sometimes out all speakers, sometimes out both
rear.  But under no setting did they come out all properly.  I used both
mplayer and VLC to test this.
