headphone output missing some sound, channels (surround -> stereo)

Hi,

I have an older EchoAudio Mia soundcard, which is working fairly well.
However, I am experiencing one problem, which I am sure a more
experienced alsa user can explain.

My soundcard outputs only 2 channels (stereo). Everything sounds fairly
well; however, some parts of some songs sound very quiet. It is like I
am listening to only center or the rear channels of surround sound, like
I am not getting all the channels mixed down to stereo. Also, the bass
seems a little too strong.

FWIW, if I listen to the same song on Windows XP (dual-boot) with the
same player (Songbird), I don't have this problem. So, I don't think
it's a hardware problem.

Any suggestions to make sure that all sound is being mixed down to 2
channels? I am guessing that I need to put something in my .asoundrc
file, but I don't know what.

Thanks!

Trevor
