smartLink WinModem w/alsa driver

Greetings List! I’m a member of this list, but not on my home computer!Do I need to load a kernel space driver to make my modem work? Is there an alsa modem driver included in my alsa release? How do I get the beans out of the can?
My fresh install of openSuse 11.0 and KDE3.5 has a smartLink winModemproblem. Yast installed smartlink-softmodem-2.9.10-203.1.i596.rpm and configured my modem as an "alsa modem".
My modem an Ali 5459 SmartLink PCI561. Alsa is version 1.0.16rc2.When I look at the smartLink rpm dependencies of the smartLink rpm it uses alsa .so libs, so I think yast has it right.
I think the smartLink rpm installed a user space smartLink modem driver called slmodemd. It doesn’t start! What’s missing in my opinion is the kernel space driver. If Alsa provides this kernel space driver, it may be snd-intel8x0m.
Snd-intel8x0 is loaded now for my ICH4 audio driver. That is working OK. Frank K
