The alsamixer output was not needed... just so you know it existed.

Most likely because the mia usb sound card is just not being found.

If you type "echomixer" into the shell as your normal user ID then
it probably, maybe, would have immediately quit (did nothing) but
it also may have indicated there is no mia device.

However this shows that the mia USB device is simply not there so
there is no point continuing with echomixer until this is resolved.

I think the driver not loading may have something to do with
needing firmware to be loaded into the USB device before it becomes
usable. There are various firmware package versions here...

use this to find out exactly what alsa version you have...

 cat /proc/asound/version

All I can suggest now is more Googling in the hope of finding a
precise article or posting about ubuntu and mia. I wrote some
instructions for my Tascam US-122 here about a year ago that
shows what I needed to do for that device, may be useful as a
hint what to do next...
