No, if you're root, that's not the problem. Sounded like a likely first notion though... Re-reading your original message, I'm not able to suggest anything very specific otherwise. There's probably something wrong with your alsa-lib installation (cross-compiled? did some paths end up wrong?) but I haven't specific advice on what to check.
