"play" is using the OSS interface ...

... and this might indicate a permission problem on the ALSA device 
nodes. What does ls -ld /dev/snd and ls -l /dev/snd say? Are you a 
member of the group which has access? (try "id" from a terminal if 
you're not sure).

If that's not it things become more involved but it's somewhat likely I 
guess.
