play works but aplay does not

I have compiled 1.0.16 on an ebox 3850 machine.
lspci shows

play wavefile.wav works fine
aplay wavefile.wav shows this:

ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1046:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
aplay: main:564: audio open error: Invalid argument

I dont now what the above is supposed to tell me? Any ideas?

aplay -l shows:
