Thank you for that.  It sounds like whether or not these digital
conversions take place is dependent on the capabilities of the sound
card or DAC.

Great, sounds like jack and pulseaudio are to be avoided.  What about
the Enlightened Sound Daemon?

Other than what's been mentioned, ALSA will do a perfect job of
passing the audio straight through to the DAC?
