I have a Midisport 2x2 that works fine, at least in 64studio and Ubuntu.
~ Therefore I can say that you do not need Windows to use this device.

Basically, the device needs some firmware to be loaded before it can be
used. When you boot into Windows the driver automatically loads the
firmware into the device. If you keep the device powered (ie. with a
soft reset), the firmware stays loaded on the midisport.

This link is Ubuntu specific, but you should be able to adapt the
information to SuSe. Your worst case scenario is that you have to type
a command to load the firmware. It should happen automatically but I
don't know anything about SuSe to be able to help you there.

/etc/udev/rules.d is where there should be a script with midisport in
the name. There may be some hints in here about why things are not
working (like the path to the firmware perhaps?).

The firmware is usually stored in /lib/firmware, at least on my systems.

| In YaST it is configured as soundcard number 2 with Driver

| In JACK ALSA the Midisport's 4 input ports and 4 output ports are visible.
| If I do not unplug my computer, everything is fine, but if I unplug my

| Since I am not very good at command line stuff, I thought installing an

| and now "midisport-firmware" and "fxload" are installed on my system.
| But it has made no difference. When I unplugged my computer and
| subsequently booted into Linux, the Midisport was dead, and it only
| revived when I booted into Windows. Whilst I can live with this, it does
| mean that I can never be fully independent of Windows...
| Obviously I am missing something basic. I found an article in
| Sourceforge about Linux Hotplugging but it was way above my head...
| Any ideas please? And if I did get the Midisport working properly with
| Linux, would it still also work with Windows?
