I think so. Try to prove your case by playing with alsamixer.

Try to switch off spdif output with alsamixer, start playing your
music and then switch on spdif output. 

If it works, it proves your case. If not, it proves nothing as the
driver may interfere. :-/
  

Well, that didn't work. I'm going to post it to alsa-devel. See if they know something. :)
